Excavating underneath existing services adjacent to rail

Part of Metronet, the West Australian government's biggest infrastructure project, required the installation of services in close proximity to existing utilities and active rail lines.

In addition to ensuring that no services were damaged or interfered with, the new services needed to be installed under existing conduits. This required these to be supported to avoid any damage during the excavation.

Using our DryVac vacuum excavator with its long-reach arm and high-pressure air lance enabled us to gradually and safely dig down to the existing services. These were then supported from the top with appropriate slings, thus enabling them to get suspended in mid-air. DryVac excavation continued until the required depth for the new services was achieved. By not using high-pressure water we prevented any potential damage to the existing pipes, avoided waste of water, and enabled the excavated material to be used as backfill.
